A Guide to Different Manual Therapy Techniques

How these simple approaches can help manage your pain and improve your mobility

Did you know touch is crucial to a human’s health and well-being? Touch is the first sense we develop as babies, and throughout our lives, it plays a vital role in bonding, communication, and stress reduction. As a field of medicine, physiotherapy has long included elements of therapeutic touch. At Physio For Life, One of the primary ways this presents itself is through different manual therapy techniques, that can facilitate movement, address pain, and more.

What exactly does manual therapy entail? Which specific techniques are included under the umbrella, and what conditions can they help?

We’ll answer those questions here–but you can also schedule an appointment at our physiotherapy office to learn more about our hands-on approach to health and wellness.

What Can Manual Therapy Do?

Broadly speaking, manual therapy helps manage neuromuscular conditions. We’ll employ it as part of both the diagnosis and treatment process, and it can provide several powerful benefits:

  • Reduce pain
  • Facilitate healing and recovery
  • Increase blood circulation
  • Promote relaxation
  • Improve mobility

Manual therapy targets joints and muscles with specialized movements and techniques. It can help our physiotherapists identify a source of impairment and prepare your body for more active exercise. In some cases, it can also be a great stress reliever and source of comfort!

Manual therapy is an appropriate approach for a wide range of different conditions, including the following:

  • Soft tissue injuries (such as muscle strains)
  • Repetitive-use injuries
  • Joint pain (back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, etc)
  • Arthritis
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

Common Manual Therapy Techniques

Manual therapy isn’t just one approach. At Physio For Life, our physiotherapists might utilize different manual therapy techniques based on your specific symptoms, condition, or needs. Here are some of the most common physical therapy techniques you might expect to find in our clinic:

Joint Mobilizations: Are you struggling with pain in one of your joints? Does it feel stiff and difficult to move? If so, joint mobilization might help. This technique involves slowly and carefully guiding the affected joint through its current range of motion.

Your joints require movement to be healthy, but standard exercise might be too much if one is impaired. A joint mobilization provides some of the benefits of movement without the pain.

Joint Manipulation: A joint manipulation is similar to a mobilization, except it’s more intense. Where mobilization is a slow, steady process, manipulation involves a sharp thrust that moves the joint just beyond its current range of motion (often resulting in an audible popping sound).

Soft Tissue Mobilization: Just as we can mobilize a joint, we can also mobilize your body’s soft tissue–your muscles, fascia, and tendons. Using techniques similar to a massage, our therapists can help break up scar tissue and improve blood flow, facilitating healing and promoting mobility.

Myofascial Release: This technique is a type of soft tissue mobilization that targets the myofascia, the tough tissue that wraps around your muscles. When the myofascia is impaired, it can lead to stiffness and immobility, so our physiotherapists will manipulate it–or “release” it–so you can move more freely.

Trigger Point Therapy: This approach is another soft tissue technique that releases tight, painful knots in your muscles and fascia (called trigger points). These points can be tender to the touch, or they can send pain elsewhere in your body. Releasing them can reduce that pain and improve your mobility.

What To Expect From Your Appointments at Physio For Life

When you visit us for the first time, we’ll start with a comprehensive exam to help us better understand your symptoms and condition. If you’re struggling with mysterious pain, we can also help identify the underlying cause.

The exam will consist of a health history and a physical assessment that tests mobility, strength, balance, gait, and more, depending on what issues you’re experiencing. This won’t be a quick check-up but an in-depth, hands-on process that ensures we fully understand your condition! Most initial appointments last about an hour (or a little longer).

The information from this exam will help us develop your customized treatment plan. We generally use manual therapy to prepare your body for more intense treatments, such as therapeutic exercise. We’ll choose the right techniques to help reduce your pain and mobilize your joints, gradually building up to more active treatments.

We’ll guide you through your plan at your subsequent sessions, adjusting our approaches as needed. As you start to improve, we’ll slowly add in different techniques, challenging your joints and muscles in a way that can help resolve your symptoms–and sometimes the condition itself!
