Find the root cause of the problem

Understand the problem.
The client experiencing symptoms should pay attention to the clues the body gives about how it behaves, such as what makes it better or worse, fluctuations during the course of a day or week, whether it is affected by mood, temperature, pressure, stress, heat, cold etc.
Sometimes there is a known cause such as a sports injury but other times, the problem arises insidiously without an obvious cause. In this case, clients assume it is their poor posture or work station set up that has contributed to it and many times, they are right.
A very old injury, even a fall, car accident or head trauma years ago can set in motion the mechanism for symptom production. Both client and physiotherapist should work together to uncover the clues and gain a better understanding of the problem. The right tests and evaluations can guide the process.
Find the root cause
Besides treating the symptoms, a better long-term solution is to find the root cause and contributing factors through a process of matching the posture or movement to the pain, then by applying a correction or technique that reduces the symptoms. If the results of the technique last, this is a good sign but if the results are temporary, then it may just be a quick fix and a more holistic approach is needed. Understanding root cause and contributing factors is crucial for long term injury management and prevention.
