Pain Management

Patients stream in and out of pain clinics, trying to find a solution for their physical pain. X-rays, MRIs and medical tests serve to provide clues as to the cause of the pain.  Medical pain relief methods and Management seem to involve needles, medication, and surgery as a last resort.

The pain that Physiotherapists treat is mostly related to soft tissue, bone, joint and nerve pain. In most cases, it is the soft tissue that is hurting, usually fibrous scarring.  Emotional and psychological pain can also contribute to the physical pain by altering posture and muscle tension.

Pain is a warning sign that the body uses to communicate that something is wrong and needs to be resolved.  When you touch a hot surface, the pain signals travel to your brain, which then sends a signal to your muscles to contract, to take your hand away.  This happens reflexively as a protective mechanism.

People with a rare condition, where they do not feel pain, get injured more easily, and may die at a younger age because they do not take the necessary steps to protect themselves from harm. This goes to show the importance of pain to signal to the body that a change is required.

How Physio For Life Can Help You Manage Your Pain

At Physio For Life, we are experts at physical pain management related to soft tissue tensions, alignment, and movement patterns.  We understand how forces get introduced to the body from injuries/ trauma such as fall, car accidents, knocks/ bumps and how habitual faulty postures also lead to uneven tissue tensions.

Soft tissue restrictions lead to compensations, that result in mal-alignment and eventually pain.  The pain is produced when joints become excessively or asymmetrically loaded or when tissues get stretched or shortened beyond their comfortable length. Soft tissue knots or adhesions, that occur from injury or repetitive stress, become bound up like a tangled mess and when pulled on, activates pain sensors.

Our core philosophy is that releasing the primary restrictions and making the right muscle connections is the key to effective pain management.  We do this through targeted stretching, deep tissue massage and manual therapy.  If we make the right releases and connections, the entire alignment and movement patterns will become more optimal, and pain will significantly diminish.  Not every restriction is released, only the primary ones that are directly causing the compensations.

Making this a lasting change requires the patient to be involved in this release and connect process. When the patient has buy-in, understands the process and actively engages with the treatment plan, there is more likelihood of rapid and lasting results.  It is not uncommon for our clients to report a 70% improvement after the first session. Understanding what is going on and how to make the necessary improvements and modifications are key to success.

This is another reason why online physiotherapy works so well. It is because the clients know they must actively engage with the process of assessment and treatment and this understanding is a given.  By working together with the physiotherapist as a collaborative team member, the patient gains greater insights into their problem and can also guide the process to a solution.  Pain management requires excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills on the part of the therapist and active cooperation on the part of the patient. If there is a will, there is a way.  Join our community of clients who have found pain relief and management strategies that have made a big difference to their lives.
