Myofascial Release

How Myofascial Release Works

If you are experiencing stiff or tight muscles, myofascial release is effective at releasing them. Myofascial release helps with pain relief by easing the tension in your muscles and connective tissue called fascia. It is a form of massage performed by your physiotherapist that focuses on creating length and space and releasing pressure areas/ points, aimed at bringing the tissue back to its elastic form.

At Physio for Life, myofascial release is not a stand-alone treatment but is used as a tool in the toolbox of many hands-on techniques aimed at restoring balance and centredness to the body.

If you have been feeling restricted, and you think you could benefit from myofascial release, give our office at Physio For Life a call today. We would be happy to set up a consultation and discuss how our treatment services could benefit you!

What Does Myofascial Release Treat?

When your muscles constrict and become tight, mobility of the affected area becomes restricted, and any movements you make can result in pain. Myofascial release reverses this sensation by loosening up the constricted area, thus promoting easier mobility and less pain.

Myofascial release can provide relief for a multitude of conditions. Some of the most common conditions treated by myofascial release include:

  • Injury. Impact to the body from falls, car accidents and sports injuries can lead to superficial and deep restrictions. These restrictions remain until they are physically stretched and manipulated. Myofascial release allows for a quicker healing process.
  • Chronic headaches/migraines. Myofascial release has also been known to relieve the pain of chronic headaches and migraines by releasing tense restrictions in and around the head and neck.
  • Back pain – When stiff and tight tissues in the legs, back, and abdominal area are released, this can give tremendous relief for low back pain.
  • Postural disorder. Poor posture leads to some muscles becoming short and tight while others are long and weak. Myofascial release gives length to the short muscles, so balancing out tensions and restoring a more normal alignment.
  • Repetitive Strain Injury. Patients with repetitive strain injury such as carpal tunnel syndrome can benefit from myofascial release by having the muscles in their hands, wrists, and forearms massaged, in order to improve blood flow and mobility.
  • Myofascial pain syndrome. This is the most commonly treated condition through myofascial release, and it can affect many of the muscles. The “trigger points” for your myofascial pain are determined and then massaged out.
  • Fibromyalgia. This condition can also cause soreness and stiffness in multiple areas. The affected areas will be determined and then massaged out.
